1st Annual Holiday Celebration: Maxwell Park Neighborhood Council in conjunction with Melrose Leadership Academy, December 13th, 2007
A note of thanks to all 150-200 students, parents, and neighbors who made our first annual Holiday Celebration at Melrose Leadership Academy (formerly Elizabeth Sherman School) a rousing success. We were so inspired that an Executive Decision was made that the next Celebration would be this Spring rather than in a year. No doubt, there will be more good food, good cheer, children's activities and community spirit to be had by all if a similar effort is made.
The following is a list of the things that were accomplished to put this Celebration together:
- Event Planning
- Buying of Supplies
- Flyer Design and Distribution
- Setup and Decorations
- Greeting Table
- Line Dancing
- Two separate Children's Activities
- Breakdown and Cleanup, etc.
Those involved, in no particular order, were:
- The students and staff of Melrose including Principal Moyra Contreras, Shannon Carey, the Unity Committee and Padres Unidos
- Ashley Thomsak and Maxpark Families, and Rhea and E.J. Bailey – Children’s activities
- Maxwell Park Neighborhood Council Board members Jan Hetherington, Robert McGillis, Krista Gulbransen, Nick Stoughton and José Dorado
- The MPNC Diversity and Outreach Committee members who conceived and coordinated the event were Shirley Burton, Barbara Taylor, Claire Antonetti, Helen Da Silva, Jan Hetherington, Jose Dorado and Dorothy
- Jan Hetherington coordinated flyer delivery, Joe Davis & Nancy Karigaca counted out & organized 3,000 fliers, & 40 people helped distribute them.
Thank you to everyone.
As can be seen, it takes many people to put on such an event, and many more will be needed to put on the next one that can be expected to be larger. It is up to all of us to volunteer our time and effort to continue the good work that has been started, such as the next Celebration and the upcoming Pierson Street Project. This means coming to our monthly meetings, joining a Neighborhood Action Team (NAT), and doing your part to make Maxwell Park stronger, safer and more livable for everyone. Please contact us for more information on how to make your contribution.
Thanks, José A. Dorado, Chair, MPNC
