Tom’s Trowel
Straw mulch is a vegetable gardener’s best friend. Pull it loose from the bale and place up close to the plants. Reduces watering by at least half; keeps out weeds; and cucumbers and zucchini will be easier to spot and also clean. Finally, it will help you find the low-lyers for prime time picking, before they turn into monsters.
I make an annual trip to Mike’s Seed and Pets, 685 E. 14th Street in San Leandro. Order ahead by phone (510-638-2005). Cost is $30 for one straw bale, have your credit card ready. I always have extra straw to give away to neighbors and community gardeners. One bale fits neatly into my antique Subaru Forester. A little messy. Wear a mask as you put down the mulch. Avoid the straw dust.
