A Slice of Pizza and Much More
by Vikki Richardson, Newsletter Reporter
The sunny corner of Virginia Avenue and High Street has gone back to its roots. Bella Italia Pasta & Pizza officially opened its doors last January, in the space that once housed, for three decades, the beloved Mama Rosa’s Pizza.
Behind the storefront are co-owners Andrea Rodriguez and Kevin Navarete, a young Oakland-based couple with roots in San Jose. Kevin first stepped into the food world as a teenager in 2016, tossing dough and learning the ropes at New York Pizza. Though life took him on various paths, his love of cooking never wavered.
That passion simmered quietly for years, eventually turning into a home-based pasta catering business. Then, thanks to a timely tip from a friend and a former owner of Mama Rosa’s, an opportunity knocked. With savings and heart, Kevin and Andrea took the leap of faith, and Bella Italia Pasta & Pizza was born.
Testing began quietly in November, as the team refined their menu and hours with input from early patrons. The owners take great pride in their cooking and are energized through caring for their customers. Now, with word spreading and regulars returning, Bella Italia is off to a great start.
Locals are drawn in by the tasty pizza and are staying for the pasta. The eatery offers a “Build Your Own Pasta” option with a variety of pastas, sauces, and proteins from which to choose. Bella Italia uses fresh, high quality ingredients and makes their sauces and pizza dough daily for all of their dishes such as Bella Delux Alfredo, Lanis Chicken Parmesan, Baked Lasagna, and Bolonia. In addition, there are salad and calzone offerings. When asked what he wants the neighborhood to know about his business, Kevin responded simply: "Don’t judge a book by its cover. Step inside and enjoy the food."
Bella Italia is now open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday, 12:30 p.m.-12 a.m. You can find them on the delivery apps and follow them on Instagram: bellaitalia.oak. Whether you're craving a great slice of pizza or a super plate of pasta, stop by and welcome this new, growing family—and their delicious vision—to the neighborhood.
